Let's be honest.  I've put on a pound or two since I moved to Santa Fe.  Last fall I joined a gym, but noticed that everything I did there I could do on my own and decided to end my membership and work out at home.  Let's be honest again.  That didn't work.  I did really great for the first couple months, but then something would come up, or I was too tired, or I had plans ... my workout streak ended.

I went out for lunch with a couple friends and we were discussing how hard it is to workout and stay healthy.  There, I realized that I needed to find something that I enjoyed doing that helped me feel better about myself.

I took my first yoga class alone on a Sunday afternoon almost eight months ago at YogaSource, a local practice.  I was hooked immediately.  I then signed up for a six week beginner class with a friend and learned so much.  In addition to using this as a workout I gained a sense of balance, flexibility, and strength.  I'm still a beginner and like the slow moving classes more than the faster, but I've been taking classes at my hotel with Harmony Yoga and think that it is the perfect balance of challenge for me.

I've been practicing a couple times a week and try to go more if I have time.  I didn't think yoga would be hard, but it really is.  I feel that this helps me stay in shape and being a person who deals with lower back pain and headaches I've found that my symptoms have subsided and I can feel when I've missed a practice or two.

Next, I want to start meditating and maybe chanting.  This is supposed to help you connect and center yourself.  The hard thing for me is staying so serious, I have a lot of work to do.  Maybe this can be a New Year's resolution ..

I highly recommend yoga to everyone and have been trying to talk Andy into going to a class with me, but he is not yet convinced.  Maybe when I master Mayurasana (Peacock Pose) or Kapotasana (King Pigeon Pose) he'll want to try ;)
